History
Rutgers University was originally chartered as Queen’s College in 1766. It was renamed Rutgers College in 1825 in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, a Revolutionary War hero and philanthropist who donated funds to the school. In 1924, Rutgers College became the university’s first campus, and in 1956, Rutgers was designated as the state university of New Jersey.
